The metropolitan area of San Francisco is the 4th most populous city in California and the 14th-most populous in the country, with an estimated population of almost 750,000. Located on the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, it is the focal point of the Bay Area. San Francisco is the 2nd most densely populated city in the United States.
The Spanish settled the tip of the San Francisco peninsula in 1776. They established a fort at the Golden Gate and a mission named for Francis of Assisi. The California Gold Rush (1848) sent the city into a period of rapid growth. Although devastated by the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt.
San Francisco is known for its chilly summer fog, steep hills, a mix of Victorian and modern architecture, and its location being surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. Popular landmarks include the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Prison Island, Cable Cars, and Chinatown. The San Franscisco Giants feature slugger Barry Bonds, soon to be the all-time Homerun leader.
